Overview of Position:
The Project accountant is the financial specialist who will review project budgets. This role will report to the project manager and provide pre-billing information for project managers to review. They are also required to provide cost estimates, prepare invoices, and prepare financial statements.
The project accountant is accountable for monitoring the financial progress of projects, investigating variances, approving expenses, and ensuring that project billings are issued to clients and payments are collected.
Key Responsibilities:
- Open, Close & Maintain Project accounts: Maintain project related records, contracts, and change orders, Authorize the transfer of expenses, expense investigations, prepare project budgets, financial forecasts, and financial statements.
- Review and Approve Expenses related to Projects: Review and approve supplier invoices, approve timesheets, overhead charges, account totals, billings, and write-off’s related to the project. Monitor and analyze project performance financials.
- Communicate, Coordinate, and Investigate Project Accounts: Investigate project variances and communicate status to management, communicate with accounts payable or receivables staff regarding unpaid contracts, respond to requests from customers.
- Reporting and Project Account Analysis: Report on project profitability, opportunities for additional billings, remaining funding (cashflow analysis), and variance analysis.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 2 – 5 years of project accounting experience
- Certification as CPA, CMA, CGA, or other designation from a professional accounting organization for Chartered Accountants, General Accountants, and Management Accountants.
- Bachelor’s degree in business, accounting, or finance, with detailed knowledge of project contracts and change order documents
- Expert in Excel
